How to Play Poker

In poker, the first step is to decide on your hand. The more cards you have, the better your hand is likely to be. A straight hand, for example, is five cards of the same suit in a row. Likewise, a pair is two cards of the same rank with three different cards of the same rank. You can also bet a high card to bet with a low card. If you do not have the best hand in poker, you must fold your bet.

Poker is played with chips. For games with more than seven players, you should provide your own chips. The white chip is the lowest value, while the red chip is worth ten or twenty or more. Blue chips are worth two, four, or five reds, and so on. To play poker, players “buy in” by purchasing one chip. In general, everyone buys in for the same amount of chips. This process can be very simple or quite complex, depending on the rules of the game.

Almost all poker games require players to purchase chips. If you are hosting a game with more than seven people, you should provide your own chips. You can purchase a single chip or a whole pack. Most games have a standard 52-card deck. Some variants add jokers, which are cards of unknown value. The cards are ranked from Ace high to Ace low, with the highest card in the middle. The game is played with five cards, known as hands. Each hand has five cards, and a pair of fives is known as a “low hand.” You can also purchase extra chips, which are called ‘wilds’.
